Church of St John The Evangelist, Carnlough
Construction of the Church of St John the Evangelist began on 10th November 1996, and the church was officially opened on the 7th December 1997. The building is a polygonal sided building built in soft red sandstone with a conical roof and fronted by a four stage, square bell tower surmounted by a simple bronze cross.
The interior of the building is illuminated by clerestory lights beneath the ceiling of African mahogany. Two great stained glass windows of varying shades of colour suffuse light across the nave and sanctuary floor. These windows provide light and emphasis to the altar area and in doing so focus attention upon it. This is further enhanced by the arrangement of the seating which is arranged in concentric circles emanating away from the centre of the space.
Interestingly the three stained glass windows found in the old church were taken out, cleaned, repaired, adapted and installed in the Scared Heart Shrine. They consist of three lights and depict the crucifixion.
