Conservation Refurbishment at Castle Gate, Derry
The refurbishment of Nos. 3, 4 & 5 Castle Gate was one of the first projects undertaken under the auspices of the Walled City Partnership. The existing shopfronts were restored to their original Edwardian form and the clumsy shutters removed from the exterior. This allows shops owners to display their shop windows out of hours and encourages pedestrians and visitors to enjoy strolling through the city.
The brickwork was repointed in lime mortar and the windows restored.
The total cost of the works was £350k.
Although there were 3 clients the job was carried out as one contract and the scheme has acted as a catalyst for similar refurbishment schemes on Waterloo Street.
